Mobile Website Development with Netbiscuits

While mobile Internet is a prime growth market of the future, the medium is not as simple as it looks. In contrast to web developments for PCs, developers using the mobile channel are confronted by a virtually limitless number of hardware and software platforms. This fragmentation might encourage some to limit their projects to specific platforms and end devices. The browser technology used by many older cell phones often appears to be the only way of realizing client applications that have the same performance and design standards as the PC web. In addition, application stores, such as the one operated by iPhone, represent a promising distribution channel for marketing client apps.

The Gustavo microsite prominently features a brand-new interactive online game and iPhone application, Bravo Gustavo, designed by Hello Design to simulate the experience of conducting an orchestra. The Bravo Gustavo online game invites users to interact with Gustavo and the LA Phil performing Berlioz’ Symphonie Fantastique (music courtesy of Deutsche Grammophon). The Bravo Gustavo iPhone application adapts the mobile device into a conducting baton, utilizing the accelerometer to directly affect the overall tempo and note duration of the music – just like a real conductor.

Distribute Mobile Websites via Apps Stores

"Making contents and services available to your customers on mobile phones up to now used to mean choosing between a mobile website and a client application," says Michael Neidhoefer, Managing Director of Netbiscuits. "Both channels have their specific advantages: a Netbiscuits-based website is displayed optimized on nearly all mobile devices. An app enables additional functions and can be very successfully distributed via App Stores, like on the iPhone. Netbiscuits integrates mobile Websites and Client Apps. "Shell App Concept" enables additional functions and opens new sales channels for mobile web services.

Are Websites Becoming Irrelevant?

Recently, I came across an article, 4 reasons websites are becoming irrelevant by Adam Broitman for iMediaConnection.com.

Many things the article says are true, but when it comes to innovative new services like the AR app, the author offers no solution to the fragmentation problem we all face in mobile.

Only companies that aim to have a extremely innovative, first mover kind of image, will go this way, because those apps won’t reach beyond the platform they were created for (e.g. iPhone). Of course, the iPhone has reached a critical mass in some markets (mainly US), but I’d share Google’s analysis, that even Google won’t be rich enough to support apps for all the different platforms out there.

45,000 Slightly Different Ways to Optimize Mobile Websites

5,000 to 6,000 unique mobile devices having 750 to 800 differentiating characteristics = 45,000 slightly different ways to optimize a mobile website. In regards to standards, it certainly looks as if we have some way to go. Handset manufacturer and service provider alliances and business strategies often conflict with one another, particularly under the existing economic conditions. Consumer market factors will contribute to the standardization problems with varying consumer budgets influencing the types of bundled technologies, thus the devices overall capabilities. Local and regional factors in law, language and culture will also add another dimension to the issue.
